The ToolGrrlz are back at cranking out the projects, folks, and we are eager to share them with you. Here is the latest.

Moving into a new house comes with its many joys as well as challenges. So, when clients presented us with a tricky project at their new place, we went to the drawing board to come up with something that would do the job, yet was also unique in style. The project: they needed sturdy, useful shelving but didn’t necessarily want to cover the wall completely with full floor to ceiling shelves.

Here’s an overview of our solution:

Using 2″ square mild Steele tubing we cut an opening in the square tubing using a chop saw with a metal blade to form a mouth. We cut 1/8″ flat stock into 6″ x 8″ squares, slid the square into the bottom of the opening and attached using a Mig welder. This created a solid footing for the wood shelves to rest on. These aren’t technically fully cantilevered, but from straight on or above this gives the illusion that the small opening is the only thing holding them up. Then, we used a 4″ grinder to buff out the metal and create a pattern. Holes were drilled with a 1/2″ Milwakee at the back of the opening so we could install them with hidden 1/2″ lags. Next, we used a torch to blacken the wood planks, sanded and varathaned the heck out of them. Finally, slip them into the slots and call the project done.
